●黒檀／こくたん

黒檀・白檀・鉄刀木を唐木三大銘木と呼びます。かつて中国（唐）を経由して日本に入ってきた高級材。

本来東南アジアが主流産地でしたが、現在はアフリカが主流産地で茶と黒の縞黒檀が主流です。真黒い黒黒檀の伐採の影響で近い将来には枯渇する貴重材です。


非常に重く硬い材で、加工は困難を極める。

耐久性に大変優れている。希少な木材であり、使い込むほどに艶が出てくる。真っ黒の中に浮かぶ木目が美しい。

辺材は淡い赤色を帯び、心材は黒色と淡赤色の帯びが交互に配列して縞目を有する。

稀に真っ黒なものもあり、それを本黒檀又は真黒 (マグロ) と称し、縞杢を有したものを縞黒檀（シマコクタン・英語ではマッカーサーエボニー）と言う。

About the Wood: Ebony (Kokutan)

Ebony is celebrated as one of the "Three Great Exotic Woods" of Asia, alongside sandalwood and ironwood. Originally imported to Japan via ancient Chinese trade routes, it is now primarily sourced from Africa, particularly Macassar Ebony, known for its striking striped pattern of deep black and reddish-brown hues.

Some rare specimens exhibit a pure, rich black tone known as "Makuro" (True Ebony). Due to overharvesting, such specimens are now extremely limited and highly prized.

Ebony is extremely dense and durable, making it difficult to process but ideal for luxury items. Its natural weight, deep shine, and distinctive grain make it an exceptional material for premium pens, instruments, and decorative crafts. Over time, the surface develops an even deeper, elegant luster with use.
